What these Numbers on train coaches indicate?
       There is always  a number visible on the compartments  and in front of the engine and you will wondered  what does the numbers indicates and carries a great significances and especially the first digit on train coaches.



Lets we will know the important and significances of the 1st digit  on the train coaches and the number and what does the whole sequence actually means….

Sequence starting with 0 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 0” run on the special occasions like Holi, Diwali and other Holidays.

Sequence starting from 1 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 1” represents the train run for the long distance.

Sequence starting from 2 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 2” also represents train run  for long distance and also the train numbers starting with digit 1 are exhausted in any series.

Sequence starting from  3 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 3” these train mainly start from Kolkata junctions and are called urban trains.

Sequence starting from  4 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 4” these sequences train run between metro cities like delhi, Chennai.

Sequence starting from  5 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 5” are generally normal passenger train.

Sequence starting from  6 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 6” are MEMU (Mainline Electric multiple unit) trains.

Sequence starting from  7 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 7” are DEMU (diesel electric multiple units) trains.

Sequence starting from  8 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 8” are reserved portion of the train.


Sequence starting from  9 :
The train with a sequence number starting from digit “ 9” are trains mainly run in Mumbai sub-urban areas.

However, this is not the only nomenclature used in our country and there are some others also use it.
Sometimes the first two digits of a sequence represent the manufacturing year of the train.Like a train with number 05052 means that it is manufactured in the year 2005. A train with a sequence 8239 means it was made in the year 1982.
There is a separate nomenclature for AC trains as below:

001-025 : AC First Class
025-050 : Composite 1st AC+AC-2T
050-100 : AC 2T
101-150 : AC 3T
151-200 : AC Chair Car
201-400 : Sleeper 2nd Class
401-600 :General Second Class
601-700 : 2L Sitting Jan Shatabdi Chair Car
701-800 : Sitting Cum Luggage Rake

Similarly , there are trains with words like WCR ,ER ,NR which means it is manufactured by WCR(western central railways) , ER(Eastern Railways) ,NR(Northern Railways) respectively.
